Our Philosophy

Anodos Discovery comes from a background in management consultancy, in particular the number of times when a strategy is agreed then the questions asked, “Who is going to make this happen?”

Every day of our lives we need to relate to the people around us, we make decisions about them based on the way they behave towards us and respond accordingly. All aspects of business life are about relationships with customers and clients, between managers and employees and colleagues across departments and other organisations.

So why do we not include understanding these behaviours when deciding who to do business with or work alongside?

Over the last decade or so it has been observed that the German economy has outperformed that of its neighbours, in particular its medium sized (Mittelstand) companies. There may be many reasons for this, however, employers do place greater emphasis on potential and talent and invest long term in employees starting with high quality apprenticeships.

To achieve this, a brief was given to a Max Planck Institute of Cognitive Sciences to identify those qualities indicating an individual’s potential which proved to be their behaviours expressed as ‘social competences’. Following consultation with employers and relevant professionals across all aspects of employment a family of assessment instruments known as Discovering Natural Latent Abilities (DNLA) were developed.

Anodos Discovery played a part in the research for DNLA and became the Partner for the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, on behalf of DNLA GmbH the holders of the world-wide rights to DNLA.

Our Vision

With DNLA we can assist organisations achieve their strategic objectives.

Empathy – we will understand both employers and employees points of view

Anodos Discovery is keen to work with companies, organisations, consultants, coaches and other professionals wishing to add a world-class instrument to their portfolio which can broaden the criteria used to ensure employees potential is maximised.

Richard Shearing, DNLA UK Partner

The strength of Richard’s background is in its breadth and depth. The career path started in the military, followed by various management consultancy roles in the National Health Service, central and local government, and large and small companies across a wide range of industry sectors.

More recently been involved in the identification and screening of investment opportunities for private investors based in the City. It has become noticeable that investors now take as much, if not more, interest in the team behind a proposition than in the proposition itself. The implication being that the personal qualities of the people ultimately define success.

Throughout this journey, it has become overwhelmingly apparent that substantial investment in business processes, information technology, marketing and fashionable management techniques do not always achieve their predicted outcomes. Why? Because without the best and motivated people these other facets of business activity cannot deliver. In other words, ‘soft skills’ should override the ‘hard skills’, so often the only basis for selection.

During this period, Richard used DNLA to make senior appointments and both he and his clients appreciated the value of DNLA assessments. When offered the UK Partnership this previous knowledge combined with experience made for an easy decision to accept.

This breadth and depth is supported by academic and professional qualifications as follows:

  • Master of Arts degree in Business & Public Sector Strategy MA
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Management Studies DMS
  • Fellow, Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce FRSA
  • Fellow, Chartered Management Institute FCMI
  • Member, Institute of Directors MIoD
  • Practitioner Member The Association for Business Psychology MABP
  • Affiliate Member, Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development

Active member of Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce, Federation of Small Businesses and Richmond Group of Consultants and professional institutes to maintain and understand changes taking place in the business environment particularly employment.

Served six years as a governor of a boy’s school specialising in business and enterprise, Richard takes a particular interest in education and employment issues and charities for ex-military personnel.
